Wool!
And possibly open fires and stews and Christmas, too, but the very first great pleasure of winter is pulling out the properly thick woollen jumpers and dresses. I like to imagine that bright frosty walks are also on the list, but I am both lazy, and a resident of a soggy climate, so walks are less than frequent.

My favourite thing about winter is the change of light, sunny days seem so bright and crisp with a frost, a clear sky at night shows all the star in all their glory. Even the dark nights have a faintly purple hue as the sun goes down and winter always means many twinkling Christmas lights as we walk home.
Yesterday I saw a Kingfisher sittimg on a branch in the gorgeous winter sunshine, this morning the canal had frozen so the children could all skim srones successfully!

I love it when there’s been a snow fall that covers all dead leaves, dark, empty branches and dirty roads, making a thick, white, silent carpet, where you can go out and walk around in a new world, where everything is sleeping under the snow and waits to be renewed in spring, walking around in a snow fall looking at the delicate tiny crystals – and then come in for some tea and sit and spin or knit! And if anyone would have some snow to send, we would love it here in Middle Sweden – just a few days before Christmas it is still green here and daisies flowering….

In my experience winter never lived up to the ideal. Instead of cocoa and fires and softly falling snow, I had the regular work schedule, compounded by holiday obligations, and a dead dry landscape. This year I’ve moved to live on the border between real-life winter, as above, and ideal winter. In the foothills where the Rocky Mountains rise abruptly out of the flat plains, I drive east onto the dry, dead plains every day for the busyness of work and quotidian obligations. But then I drive home, up 300 feet into the foothills, and I take a walk in my neighborhood taking care to face west, toward the peaks rising thousands of feet overhead just several hundred years away. I see the snow and the dark firs overhead, the twinkling lights of the little mountain town coming on down below, and feel the winter quiet and calm. It feels as though the promise of winter in its full, idyllic beauty is always there, almost within grasp. I love it.

My favourite thing about winter is something of which there is none this year – SNOW! Not a single snowflake on the ground come December 17th… this is downright unnatural for my part of Canada. So instead, I will settle on one of my second-favourite things about winter. That beautiful cold light you see mostly at sunset when the days grow far too short, and the way it silhouettes trees against the sky. Bonus points if our family of crows happen to be lounging around in the top branches of the trees.
Hmmm, following the footprints of songbirds in the snow is great too, but that requires snow as well…

My two great pleasures are staying at home and walking everywhere I need to go. I love the way winter weather gives practical sense to both these things. It can be an excuse to stay home and work on a project, cook, or read and write, since it’s cozier inside anyway. In the summer months, I sometimes feel like I am missing out on an opportunity- to work in the garden, to jog, to sit in the sun. Then, when I absolutely must leave the warm comfort of my home, why would I want to shovel the car out first? I’d rather spend an hour walking in the snow than digging out a car. I have a long, puffy down coat for just this reason: winter is my season for walking to work, walking for groceries, walking the dog…

That first, crisp snow is a lark for everyone in our house. The chickens wander along a dugout path between walls of snow, from the coop to the porch and back again. But the one who revels in it the most is Willow, our yellow lab. At nine years old, she has never lost her unabashed joy in “snow romping.” She jumps about, grabbing snow in her mouth and tossing it helter skelter into the air. Then she wheels toward me, planting her front paws as if to say, “C’mon, I dare you!” I toss a snowball in a gentle arc, and she leaps for all she’s worth! High in the air, she closes on it, and it disintegrates into tiny bits that explode from the sides of her mouth or off the end of her black nose. She wheels toward me again, and again I throw. And again she wheels. I can almost hear her laugh.

I just found your blog via a link, Borealis is beautiful! I’ve only tried colourwork on small projects but this pattern doesn’t look too scary, just gorgeous. My favourite thing about winter is the first snow (which is supposed to fall tomorrow, fingers crossed). I just love the feeling of snow falling on my face and I love the feeling of stillness it creates when it covers everything. There’s nothing better than looking outside in the morning and noticing how different the light (or even darkness) is and then realising it snowed in the night.

My favorite thing about winter has to be the ability to ski. My family has been skiing for generations and we first went to our local (as I see it now) hill when I was eight. There’s something about the feel of my skis against the snow, whether it’s been packed or has freshly fallen, that just makes me want to sail down the slope at top speed; my eyes get watery, the wind stings my cheeks, and I often just laugh my way down the incline.

For me there is something very special about waking up on a cold winterday with the window slightly open for some fresh air. Just that moment when you wake up and you can smell the fresh snow fallen that night, that moment even the air feels fresher, cleaner than normal and noises from outside are more damped. I have cherised such moments since I was a child, for me that’s winter. And on days that start like that I am at my best.

My favorite thing about winter is how clear the sky can get at night, when the moon is full, and it looks like you could just reach up and pick it out of the sky like an apple still hanging on the bare branches of the trees. I’ve not had a chance to read all the ideas that folks have shared (because I was so excited to find this). And so, there might be some duplication here, as I can’t imagine anyone not responding like I have:
It’s the smells of winter that get me.
There’s the smell of the air just before the snow starts to fall. Sharp, grey, energized.
And, the smell of a super-cold night– sharp, too, but without the grey tones. More like the deepest, clearest midnight blue. It just sparkles.
The snow bounces the light, but it seems to echo smells, too. So the balsam, piney, woody smells of trees can finally be enjoyed on their own, separate from the earthiness of the forest floor. Those smells are brown and green and warm. They punctuate and balance out the sharp.
No other time of year smells like this; we just have to breathe it in while we can. It’s just so yummy.

There are so many things that are wonderful about Winter. Cold, clear days when the sky is blue and the air seems to sparkle. Trees that become something more akin to architecture with the shapes that their branches make. The joy of coming home in a cold day into a warm house. Wonderful, hearty food to sustain and warm me. The beauty of snow – the way it transforms a landscape, that very specific crunching noise of snow underfoot and the way that snow changes sound. The crisp, clean, invigorating air. Some of the best workdays start with the frantic sprint to the train, followed by the realization that I’m not as late as I thought, and the subsequent jacket opening to cool down, which lets that icy air in to hit my skin, swish the heat away, and slow my heart. I guess I need to learn how to time things so that I have to run…but only halfway.

Trite as it is, snow. This is my third Scottish winter, having moved here from a more Mediterranean climate, and I think snow is just about the most amazing thing ever. I’ve never cared for the cold of winter, probably something about frostbit toes standing on the playground waiting for school to open after walking there as a child. But I still find that fresh snow fall beautiful as it covers all the ugliness in a landscape, perhaps especially a cityscape. A lumber yard can look lovely. The most mundane of things look transformed. It does not last of course as the snow plows come through and throw snow into messy piles on the road shoulders and where people walk soon can be come a sloppy slush, but that first view is lovely. I love waking in the middle of night and looking out at a field of fresh snow and how it just lights up the night. “The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, gave a luster of mid-day to objects below.”

Snow is a rare thing for us. Going to Northern Minnesota to visit my oldest daughter is a real treat for this cold weather lover. The ground is invisible because of the repeated snowfall and the air is so cold going into your lungs, you really know you’re alive! It’s a great place to send knitted items from me! Lovely pattern and great colour choice. In Danish we have a thing called ‘hygge’. Hygge is sort of both a verb and an adjective and a noun. The best translation is perhaps cosiness, but it is still not a covering word. Hygge is for all your favourite situations, being around your loved ones and doing laid back things, often involving food, and just feeling good. It is difficult to explain, but hygge is definitely my favourite thing about Winter. Walking in the snow covered woods with my family and dogs, getting home and lighting the stove and candles, having mulled wine and Christmas cooking and knitting and chatting – that is hygge.

What I love in December are what we call “Christmas villages” that flourish in the city centers of Northeastern France (it is originally a German tradition) where you can buy all kinds of Christmas treats and gifts, and more importantly, burning hot mull wine or apple juice with spices to drink as you walk home in the cold weather…

Winter is for me the contrast between the cold outside and warmth inside. What I like most, are the walks with our dogs when it is snowing, the air is crisp and cold and smells fresh and clean. And of course, coming home, drinking hot tea and knitting on a new project ;-).

Winter is my favourite seasons! I love going out for a walk on the snowy moors clad in as many woollen garments as possible. Then returning to a lovely warm house with the fire going, the smell of roast butternut squash soup on the hob and warm homemade mince pies for pudding. I struggle to find things I like about winter – it’s never been my favourite season. But since learning to knit, I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more. I’ve spent the past few evenings knitting tiny legwarmer and mitt sets for small girls of my acquaintance – so I think my favourite thing is long, dark evenings with the woodburner turned up to 11 and plenty of knitting to keep me occupied.

I think it changes every year… but this year, my favorite thing about winter is that I get to come home and wind down for a month before going back to school (I’m a college student in LA, whereas my home is in Northern California). It’s interesting having two domains. One always seems to be an escape from the other, and I guess this time around quiet NorCal is the escape from busy LA. I’m thankful for this winter, and I’m thankful for home.

I love baking goodies for everyone during the winter. With the holidays, I like to bake a little something for everyone. I bake for my staff members to let them know I appreciate them, my boss to thank him for being supportive, my neighbors to let them know I enjoy their company whenever I pass by and say hello, the secretaries at the school where I work as well as the maintenance staff. I feel that when you make food for someone, you’re giving a piece of yourself with it, and that’s what appreciated during the winter holidays.

I love how winter always makes me think back over the year. It makes me grateful for the good things in my life and my year, makes me feel good about having survived bad things that happened beyond my control, and makes me consider changes I could make to fix bad things that I do have control over. Then after Dec. 22 I like to think about how every day is getting longer and about all the possibility in longer days and a brand new year.

My favourite thing about winter is the warm silent cold. When there is plenty of snow a sunny winters day is almost balmy and eerily quiet, even in the city. And of course following a good day in the warm cold, sledding or skating, is the return to your warm home.
I can remember as a child, after a day of outdoor fun which included snow angels, coming home to a warm dinner and hot bath. Mom always provided my sister and I with a little extra warmth by heating up our flannel pyjamas and giving us lots of cuddles to keep the warmth in as we drank the perquisite hot chocolate before she tucked us into bed.
