Last week we said goodbye to our cat, Jesus. Now, some of the (very few) weird communications I’ve had over the years on this blog have related to the name of our long-lived and much beloved feline and all I can say to those who find themselves troubled by his moniker is that there is nothing inherently wrong (and certainly nothing disrespectful) with Jesus as a name, just as there was nothing wrong with Jesus, the cat. Jesus was 19. This is a long time to share one’s life with an animal.
He was Tom’s cat, when I met Tom.
A determinedly outdoor animal, Jesus lived out the majority of his years with Tom and I, in different cities. He was a particularly canny cat: he avoided roads and cars, saw off countless local feline interlopers, and devised his own unique way in and out of our first floor Edinburgh flat via a plum tree and the bathroom window.
(those are knitted mice, not real ones)
Jesus was resourceful and resilient. He once went missing for over a fortnight while on holiday at Tom’s mums, in St Annes. When a neighbour finally responded to our “have you seen Jesus?” flyers, he was reluctantly captured in a nearby garden. Later, he disappeared about a month before our move from Edinburgh (perhaps he didn’t want to leave). Tom had despaired of ever finding him, but through a chance encounter we discovered Jesus, happily being fed full cooked breakfasts by a neighbour who had renamed him “Fatso” and refused (at first) to believe that he belonged to us (Tom had to provide photographic evidence before she’d give him up).
Jesus was more than ordinarily interactive. He was one of the only cats I know who a had a trick that he would perform on command (waving back at you, like a Chinese lucky cat, if you performed the same gesture). It’s hard to know with cats, but I also suspect that Jesus had a sense of humour. Certainly he tolerated ours.
Jesus was remarkably hale and hearty. Over the course of his long life, he never suffered a single serious health problem – until his final months.
Goodbye, Jesus. Here’s to your long and happy life.
My condolences to you and Tom. Kind regards, Kavita, South Africa

I’m so sorry to read about the loss of Jesus! What a lovely life story you’ve written, though. As it happens, I have always thought Jesus was a great name. Years ago, long before the Sneaky Pie Brown cat mystery series, its author Rita Mae Brown had a cat named Sweet Baby Jesus. Related to this: we have had occasion to medicate our cat (Ellie.) In order to do this we roll her up in a towel, so that she resembles the swaddled baby Jesus in the manger, or a burrito. So I call the maneuver “Sweet Baby Jesus Burrito.” I mostly remember your Jesus’ misadventures–going AWOL just before your move from Edinburgh, and I think a period of adjustment at your current abode. (Maybe that’s when he took his two week vacation at Tom’s mother’s house?)

Please accept my and The Cat Shimmer’s condolences on your loss. What a long and wonderful life Jesus had with you and Tom. Shimmer too is an indoor-outdoor cat. He started as a feral kitten but decided to compromise after a near-death experience. Shimmer is a mere 14 years old and still crosses the ravine to obtain treats from the denizens of a local cafe.
Anyone questioning Jesus’ name has, in addition to other probable limitations in their worldview, no awareness that in some cultures humans are named Jesus. (Shim adds he has yet to meet a human named Shimmer.)

Dear Tom, I address this to you of your primary relationship with Jesus. I share your pain of loss of a feline. In the early days you used to include pictures of him, but not for long. I asked about him but don’t recall a reply. It is not easy getting cats to cooperate in photographic attempts. Then, the one really good one becomes too personal to share. How lucky for him not to have had any lingering illnesses during his long life. I do hope the end was painless. He is now in heaven sitting on the lap of an angel. Your pain will lessen with time. I have a black cat, Charley. -Goldie

So very sorry for your loss. Jesus seems like a particularly cool cat, and very handsome too. You wrote one hell of an obituary for him. Made me tear up and laugh at the same time (which, in my book, is exactly what a good obituary should do, unless the deceased had no sense of humor whatsoever). Something that confuses me, though: “Jesus” is seen as potentially disrespectfull, while “Fatso” is deemed acceptable as a name? Weird.

Kate and Tom, my condolences! I’m sure you know the 18th-century poem “For I Will Consider My Cat Jeoffry,” by Christopher Smart, which is a eulogy full of beautiful and idiosyncratic remembrances of Jeoffry that are not dissimilar to your tales of Jesus. He writes, “For at the first glance of the glory of God in the East he worships in his way. / For is this done by wreathing his body seven times round with elegant quickness.” And, “For when he takes his prey he plays with it to give it chance. / For one mouse in seven escapes by his dallying.”
Just in case you’re not familiar with it I’ll link to an excellent post about it from the lovely Spitalfields Life blog: http://spitalfieldslife.com/2013/11/10/for-i-will-consider-my-cat-jeoffrey/.

I’m sorry to hear this. What a great long life he had – he must have loved the last few years with all that countryside to roam.
That huge tail reminds me of our late Molly (aka Darth Maul) a huge personality on her own terms. She terrorised the local dogs, and dealt single handedly with dog fouling in our street – as owners walked them elsewhere, rather than having a huge hissing beast leap on the fence.

Thank you for sharing Jesus’ life with us; really moving, wistful and funny (I’m reading this at 4 am, California time). 20 years with any living creature is a long time indeed. Gorgeous pics (the windowsill smiley is priceless as is Jesus looking at the knitted mice—but I have to say, that picture of Tom in bygone days takes the cake…and frosting.)
My childhood pets remain a close presence in my heart and soul (I am in my late 40s). I still hope to share life with another pet at some point but very urban living and long hours away from home make that difficult for me (and my spouse). Fortunately, I have very strong bonds with my dog-niece (and the human nieces, too). Again, thank you for all that you do.

Maybe if there is a cat afterlife he is playing with my Noah, a big soppy but very loving ginger cat who was so named as he insistently decided he was coming to live with us during some floods a few years ago. He was originally Martha but as the vet assured me he had male tackle, Nah seemed most appropriate as he er survived the flood. And the snip. No religious offence intended!!!!

I am sorry for the loss of your family member. I have had cats in my family since I was a little girl and I remember them all with fondness and friendship. St. Gertrude is the patron saint of cats and her saint’s day is March 17th…it kind of gets lost in the green beer festivities. So Jesus at least has a patron saint to join up with as he sails west.

What a wonderful cat, thank you for sharing moments if his life with us. I must admit to chuckling at the thought of your posters ‘Have you found Jesus?’ And wonder how many people were surprised to read on and find that you were searching for a lost cat!

my condolences! lovely written and recognizable in every single way.
I have lived my whole life with cats and you couldn’t have described a better way to the ‘cat being’.
Cats have a will of their own, they are funny, naughty, unpredictable and cuddling.
Goodbye Jesus! Have fun in cat heaven!

So sorry to hear about your loss. We had to say goodbye to our beautiful Jess at 23 . We were very fortunate to have him for so long. It’s never easy but the knowledge that you shared a wonderful life together and have made lovely memories will make it easier.

So sorry to hear that Jesus has died. Over the years I have had many cats and it is so sad when they die. Thinking of you both.

So sorry for your loss. We had to say goodbye to our beloved old kitty “Chewy” and dog “Taiga” this winter. It’s a heavy loss to lose cherished four-legged members of the family.

You’ve done him proud… he could not have hoped for a better eulogy. I know how hard it is to part with a beloved pet, they become so much a part of the structure of your life, that it seems very empty without them.

Awe, I’m so sorry to hear about Jesus, never easy losing an animal friend! He did live a long, happy and eventful life, I actually remember reading your post about him disappearing before your move from Edinburgh.
Always a comfort knowing you gave them a good life but goodbyes are hard.

Jesus is a perfectly respectable name in Latin
cultures, although the J is pronounced as an H as
in HEY-Seuss.

He was a beauty, lucky you sharing your life with him for so long. Sympathies.
My beloved cat used to stroke my face gently with her paw.
Anyone who has a problem with his name should travel in Spanish speaking countries where there are a lot of people named Jesus.

Oh Kate and Tom, I’m so very sorry. I just had to say goodbye to my oldest cat, Piotr Illych Catinsky, aka Pete. Sweetie Petie was 16 and was my husband’s cat. We miss him. Sending loving thoughts and gentle hugs your way.
