It has been a very wet and cool July. As our Spring was unusually dry and warm, the garden has definitely appreciated the wet weather, and apart from having to wear the dreaded rain pants on my long daily walks, I’ve rather enjoyed it too. Certainly there is something rather jolly about hearing the rain on the shed roof, or on the velux window when I’m writing. I gave myself a month to complete work on this book: it is almost finished now, and I’m pleased with it. More of this quite soon.
While I’ve been holed up writing, Tom’s been out photographing rain.
I’m missing my trip to the Hebrides too this year. Here in Northumberland we have a beautiful coastline too but it’s busier than I’ve ever seen it . Can’t even find a place to park the car if we want to give the dog a beach walk. I’m happy for the local businesses benefitting from this boom but missing deserted beaches.

Summer rain on a roof always reminds me of childhood caravan holidays. I love it.

One of the things I loved about camping was being snug and dry and safe in my sleeping bag, and listening to wind whipping around and rain belting on the tent.

These puddles are sooo relaxing even just looking at the photos I feel calmer already. Definitely hoping to get there one day when travel opens up again!

I’m so-o-o-o tired of some people’s portrayal of Scotland as a wet, dreich place where the weather is constantly depressing (as in the book I’m reading, set in Aberdeen). I think it’s wonderful that Scotland has such variable weather from still, blue days to grey, misty days, and every type of weather is so beautiful – as Tom shows in his photographs. Thank you for confirming what I already knew.

Toms picture are a feast for the eyes. We are in our warm and dry months in Portland. I miss the rain. I love sitting on our urban balcony listening to the rain beating down on our neighbors rooftops. We face north and have spectacular rainbows as the storms break up. We even have a view of Mt. St. Helens which is truly a breath to behold. So many wondrous sights in our natural beauty of Portland. It’s just so very sad how the city is under siege with protests. Please send good thoughts our way.

I love the rain sounds too and find it instantly relaxing and reassuring. The photos by Tom are beautiful and we certainly need every glimmer of beauty available at the moment don’t we? We (here in Adelaide) have also had bouts of rolling fog and freezing days. Very curious about new book.

Hi Tom. I see you have found the original gallifreyan writing from Doctor Who, in the puddles with raindrops. I am a huge fan of Doctor Who, and watch the DVDs here in Denmark. And I am also a huge fan of your photos of the damp weather and landscapes. Thank you for this.

Oooh and I love the pics too, especially the monochrome ones which remind me of an adventure into batik dyeing. Such superposition of crests and troughs that a wave physicist would be excited by? Are the potatoes growing well in the puddley weather?

Even looking at these pictures is refreshing. Tom’s photos are always wonderful, no matter what. We haven’t had any rains since January here in Las Vegas. So if you have a chance to send us some, it would be much appreciated. :)

Thank you both as usual. I hope you both realise how very much you contribute to keeping us grounded in normality. Even outside of Covid you help us see another side of life. Rain would be an absolute blessing here in Ontario at the moment, like Brenda we’re desperate for it. So when I get overwhelmed with the heat I will sit and stare at Toms puddles to refresh myself. Thank you so much again.

Tom, wonderful pics. They made me feel cool and refreshed, some feat as we are in the midst of a heat wave here in Massachusetts. Temps today predicted to reach 98 F.
What kind of tree is the one covered in moss?

I am guessing it’s a very old birch tree (Betula pendula or Betula pubescens) hence the gnarleyness. Tom?

What a gorgeous start to my day, Kate and Tom. It was a bit of a balm considering today would have been the day we would be arriving in Scotland and heading up to Tongue and then onto the Hebrides for a good adventure… were it not for the dismal state of pandemic. I have been consoled as well by the fact that when we reprise this dream, I will be armed with the stories of the makers of Glasgow in your book and the exprience will be all the richer for it. Thank you for your company.

Tom your photos are certainly taken with an artist’s eye. Inspiring.
Kate, all the best as you put the final touches on your writing. Writing in the rain is the best.
