As the first copies of our 10 Years in the Making book arrived in the KDD warehouse yesterday, I thought (not for the first time) about what a very weird year it has been.
We published four brand new titles . . .

. . .and created 23 new patterns – the majority of which were garments.

Tom held his first gallery exhibition . . .

. . . which despite being curtailed by lockdown, was a great success (thank you, Tighnabruaich Gallery and everyone who came to see and hear Tom’s work!)

I read my poetry in public for the first time (eek!).

and, due to socially-distanced photoshoot requirements, spent much more time modelling my own design work than I have done in recent years. I don’t think I’ll ever feel completely comfortable in front of the camera, but at least I can get on with it after more than a decade’s practice!

Like all businesses, this year was incredibly unpredictable, and posed repeated challenges.

The manufacture, supply and distribution of some of the things that we produce has been (and to an extent remains) quite tricky.

These things are manageable for us though, and given what so many small businesses are facing, we feel very lucky in both the nature of what we do and the way the company is structured. That said, I confess to feeling increased frustration at the administrative burdens of various things this year – most notably the pointless act of self-sabotage known as Brexit. And whether as individuals or businesses, I imagine most of us will be familiar with this year’s prevailing sense of not knowing quite what’s coming next, yet having to find the will and sense of purpose to keep moving on, regardless.
This year has held both surprises and disappointments for us as a company – we’ve discovered some new things that really work, and learned how other plans might not turn out as expected. Speaking personally, I’ve felt blessed to have discovered a real renewed sense of creativity and purpose in my design work – and am already looking forward to pursuing a host of new knitterly ideas in 2021.

Throughout 2020, the KDD team has often had reason to feel enormous gratitude for all the readers and knitters out there, who like what we are doing and support our endeavours. In this most unlikely of years you have consolidated our sense of collective creative purpose, and helped us thrive in more ways than one. Thank you so much.

I and the rest of the team send you a virtual hug, with much love and many best wishes for a safe and peaceful festive season. Here’s to next year!

Dear Kate,
I wanted to extend a thank you for the daily blog posts that you maintained, with contributions from Tom and other members of the KDD team, in the early months of the pandemic. They brought much comfort, perspective and inspiration during a particular challenging period for me personally.
Looking forward to receiving my 10 years in the Making book (hopefully in time for my early January birthday!) and treating myself to some KDD yarn to start one of the projects.

An d much love to you, Tom, Mel and the team, Kate, for enriching our lives throughout the year and cheering the autumn and winter with the Ten Years club. You have produced so many wonderful designs, and given us your wonderful landscape in the photos – for those of us confined to suburbia, that has been such a gift. Have a wonderful break and look forward to what 2021 brings.

I am blessed to be sheltering on a beautiful lake in Northern California and find reading your posts from this year bring comforting memories of a much loved visit to your Lochs in 2019. I have discovered the meditative rhythm of Fair Isle and the exploration of it’s history has led me to you and Milarrochy Heids! Thank you for this gift during this difficult time. I have no doubt 2021 is bringing hope to our world which has grown so much smaller. My wish for the New Year is savoring Wheesht and holding some of your delicious colors of yarn in my hands. In the meantime, I wish you and your loved ones, peace, comfort and good health.

Hi Susan – can you email us at info@katedaviesdesigns.com and we can get to the bottom of what is happening here? We ship to the USA every day (and much more rarely the minor outlying islands!)

Hello, my name is Olga, Spain, a long time ago I bought the Yokes book. I would like to knit the jacket on the cover whose pattern is on page 56. The question is: can you direct me to a pattern, a tutorial that tells me how to make the neck less low-cut? Like the one in La Niña on page 23. I really like these drawings, since my youth, I prefer to weave from top to bottom, but hey I could fix the opposite, what I don’t know is to do less is prayed and that the drawing fits perfectly. ale I appreciate the help of him. Thanks a lot. Olga

Thank you. Thank you for keeping going, keeping your ethical basis, and for keeping so many of us going too with your yarn, your patterns, your photography, your enterprises and, perhaps most of all, your yarns.
May 2021 be at least as productive, and less fraught!

Thank you for all your lovely patterns! I recently finished Horology and am swithering about which one to knit next… Fleckit or a long-sleeved Scatness?
I hope you have a restful relaxing time over Christmas & new year, and all the best for 2021 (which must surely be better than 2020?!).

For me one of the best things about 2020 has been your posts. I loved the post about the early morning photo shoot with the fishermen. I had visions of Bob rooting through their bags looking for bananas with Bruce looking the other way in embarrassment. That would have finished them off! I would love you to design a long line cardigan along the lines of Sterntaucher. I hope you all have a good Christmas. Very Best Wishes

To you and your loved ones and the whole team all the best for the year to come.
The last few weeks with a the inspiring patterns, the beautiful pictures and your texts have been amazingly important to me.
I spent this year mostly quite isolated from my friends and family. As a high risk patient right in the center of one of Germany’s biggest cities alone at home was the safest place to be.
Your took me out of my urban surroundings and opened a window for me from which I was able to see the beautiful Scottish landscape and almost could smell the air and taste the salt.
Thank you for that!

Have a truly relaxing break and thank you for all that you have given us this year – you and the team have been an absolute tonic. I’m going to take my time to choose which of the new garments to knit – i had assumed that it would be something Schiehallion but the new Millarochie backen shade is a genius new colour and looks so good with ardlui (which is my existing favourite). I have to let the WANT WANT WANT settle down before deciding.
