Ta Da! Meet Midstream – the fifth pattern release from Bold Beginner Knits
Since I created Rowchoish for the West Highland Way collection, I’ve had a bit of a thing for using simple oblongs to create interesting shapes that wrap around the body. I have so many oblong-y ideas, in fact, that they could probably form their own mini-collection . . . but there’s just one in Bold Beginner Knits. Of all the patterns in the collection, Midstream is the easiest and most straightforward to make, but it’s still a striking-looking piece that’s fun to knit and wear – whatever kind of knitter you are.
Midstream is constructed in one long strip, that’s worked from side to side. . .
A simple slipped-stitch pattern adds texture and structure to the fabric . . .
When the piece is long enough, it is simply folded, to create an envelope that wraps around the body. . .
A pair of cuffs are added, and an edging is worked all around the front opening . . .
And that’s it — a super-cosy, blanket-style cardigan that’s easy to throw on and wrap up in on a chilly evening.
Midstream works up really quickly in Àrd-Thìr.
It’s the perfect piece in which to parade your Bold Beginner skills!

As I am knitting this, I am wondering if it could be made into a two colour piece it would make a very nice blanket.

Hi Kate ! I have been looking for a shrug for a long time. Is there a lighter weight version of this? Thanks.

Hi Vicki, the pattern is very easy to modify for a lighter weight yarn: you could simply knit the main rectangle to the same dimensions specified in the pattern, then follow the instructions for folding, seaming, and working the edge.

Thank you Kate. Just bought it and will start today because I finished Carbeth last night !! I made some mistakes on the sleeves and the back decreasing but I think it still looks great :)

I love the texture. I had a sweater with this stitch pattern as a child. It brings back memories.

This will be a great one for beginners! Hope to show my God-daughter…I can see her wearing/knitting this…what a good feeling piece. Really enjoying your Bold Beginner’s series. Thanks Kate!

So elegant. Love the slip stitch; it makes the difference. I have the same concern as Jane; how to wear under a coat. I can see it as a coat, but wish it there was more in front to keep out the New England winter winds. I am very tempted. But why the questions? Kate, your designs are beautiful . Thank you.

Love this one, I’m a great fan of this type of wrap too. I often make them stripey with leftover stash, which wouldn’t work as well with this one because of the stitch, which needs a really nice yarn in one colour to show off the pattern.

I love this style although never sure how to wear a coat with it?!
Great design and nice texture. I like the sculptural shape.

Thanks! I suppose I think of it AS a coat . . . or performing the same function as one anyway
