Hello, it is I, Bruce. Today I am here to tell you about SHED. If you don’t know the meaning of SHED, I can reveal it is a strange wooden place with a distinctive smell in which humans like to spend a lot of time, particularly at this time of year.
Here there are two SHEDS and on the left you see SHED one. SHED one has many functions. On Saturday evenings, Kate and Tom can be found hanging out in here, eating snacks, drinking beer and listening to their favourite radio show. In the wintertime, SHED one is also the place in which Tom likes to cycle to nowhere on the peculiar and noisy machine known as Turbo Trainer. But on spring and summer days, the main purpose of SHED one seems to be as a space for reading and knitting. These are just two of the silent, absorbing activities that Kate seems to do an awful lot of, but which all seem pretty pointless to me.
But BOB has become quite good at distracting Kate from these pointless activities. SHED one really is an excellent place for a weary dog to sit, with its cushions and blankets and comfortable seats. . . .
. . . and with a bit of persistence, it is possible for we dogs to dislodge Kate and take over SHED one completely!
Shh! Look! Kate’s over in SHED two and has no idea that the sofa is now ours! Just don’t sit on the knitting, BOB!
Shed TWO is in some ways far less interesting than SHED one.
For example, if you are a dog, there’s no perspective from SHED two on the world outside, with its endless possibilities of passing humanfriends and sneaky marauding CAT enemies.
SHED two is, in short, no place for a vigilant and dutiful dog with important garden greeting and policing work to do!
Shed TWO is, instead, a place of human work.
And if you look at things from broader perspective: that is, if you take the long view (which I, as a philosophic dog like to do . . . )
SHED two can in fact be regarded as a very interesting place indeed! And that’s because, as I’ve discovered, SHED two is actually the place where many exciting SNACKS originate!
In SHED two, Kate’s activities are not actually pointless, because she is “potting up” and “bringing on” the tasty things which later appear out here!
These wooden objects are not SHEDS, but BEDS and they contain many interesting edible things!
Personally, I’m very partial to fresh tasty leaves of any kind
and I LOVE strawberries, both green and red . . .
but as you, dear readers, may know, my most favourite food of all is the POTATO
And potatoes appear right here!
I know the potatoes are ready after the plants have flowered and, although it would take me no time at all to do ALL the digging that’s required, it is one of life’s great mysteries that I am not allowed anywhere near the potato beds at any time of year! The same, sadly, goes for the strawberries, which Tom says are netted against my attentions, as well as those of the local DEER.
With its instructions to KEEP OFF THE POTATOES and its SHEDS full of human activities both pointless and productive, the garden is sometimes a frustrating place for we dogs to be.
Still, there is some fun to be had out here, and one can always live in hope of the occasional potato.
See you soon, Love Bruce x
Nice! (And beautiful photos! )

How utterly gorgeous to have news of you. Your appearance always confers gratitude for the love of a dog!
You look fabulous!!! Potatoes become you!
The Hound in my Life, Frankie, has a love of tomatoes.
I spent a summer eagerly awaiting ripening-tomato-inspection-time only to find my ripening tomatoes, on the eve of perfection, vanished or vandalised!
While I raged, one innocent-looking Staffy, watched
on… mouse-quiet.
I managed to catch her in the act eventually!!!
Enjoy that summer…
Cheers

Well Bruce I think you and Bob are lucky to live in such a beautiful spot with TWO beautiful sheds. If you don’t distract Kate she might knit you a lovely blanket for your bed or a nice scarf with bells for Christmas. Or maybe some ear muffs to drown out Bob when he talks too much. But I can understand your joy when you get the sofa! Take care

Always nosy about others’ homes, and now that I am unexpectedly working from home, I am also appreciating the luxury of having a space where I can spread out my untidy work things and then CLOSE THE DOOR at the end of the day. If course, my space is not as homey as Shed 1 (and maybe not as productive as Shed 2!!)

Dear Bruce, thank you so much for your interesting perspective on the garden. Perhaps you do have something in common with your CAT enemies: some cats are known to love strawberries as well, (green, red or flowering…)

Hi Kate
Such a great post and your beds look amazing! I would love to know who made them for you as I live in Edinburgh and need some at the bottom of my garden – they look super sturdy.

I too would be very interested in the pop up netting, as there’s a constant battle between me and local cats in terms of their digging up my seedlings and using my veg beds as toilets…

Oh the sheds!! Did you make the covers for the raised beds? I am just contemplating how to address our raised beds to deter both dogs and possums. Those looks easy to manage.

Hi Bruce! (Bob and Kate as well) I feel this post was written just for me. It is great to see my shmacko loving friend (we both know the best thing to go with potatoes is a meaty treat stick) enjoying the garden and giving me an update on Kate’s raised beds. I have popped a couple in my own garden this year and have tasty leaves, strawberries, potatoes and more growing. I may even have some raspberries grow here this year. I expect when I get another shmacko loving lab I will have fun attempting to thwart the food stealing on a daily basis.
Everyone at Casa Davies stay safe and healthy. Love the Edinburgh Shmacko lady.

Dear Bruce,
You need to explain to Tom that he should get a
direct drive turbo trainer – much less noisy 😊
Kind regards from a cyclist who also likes to knit 🚴🚴

Hi Bruce, you fooled me! When I saw the title of your post I thought it was about Kate’s inkle loom, which also has two sheds. Thank you for your perspective on the OTHER two sheds. I love your posts ( and those of your family members too)!

ha ha, Linda – perhaps there will be more about the other two sheds soon!

Oh Lord, Bruce, I have the same SHED as SHED two, and I’m embarrassed at how mucky mine is compared to Kate’s… I’m mystified how SHED one sometimes looks shallow, and sometimes much deeper. How do you explain that? And just one more thing, could you ask Kate where she got her classy orangey yellow glasses?

Hello Bruce ! It is I, Ghillie (yellow, male lab to you perhaps), and I am the owner of a knitting, reading fanatic. My owner LOVES your number one shed, and has dreamed of owning one for many years. She is a a bit fancy though, and insists on calling it a Summer House, ha ha. I am going to make sure she does not see the photos, or she may just go and get a SHED (number one) and you rather infer that it’s not much fun for us labs when that happens. Mmmm, I think a chewing session is in order.

Dear Bruce
You write an excellent blog post, and I feel that you can be very flattered that the humans have let you take free reign – or, er, The Lead.
This may be something also to do with what my Human calls “A Race to the Solstice” which means that plants – and people – who live at high latitudes have a lot of growing, and eating, to do to catch up in May-June with the growth of “softer” southern relatives.
And my Human’s potato plants are only just showing through. They certainly have their work cut out to produce a crop for YOUR appetite! (Myself I prefer juicy grass and leaves.)
Well done with the Cushion Capture! I have a friend (sshhhh – a CAT!) called Paolo who likes to do the same in his Human’s Sitooterie (Glaswegian for Shed One).
But he makes a peeline for the door if any of the Human’s comforting-chat-clients turn up.
Luckily the Human has taken to using a game called Zoo, instead, with her chatterers.
So Paolo has not experienced The Clearances this summer. I hope you will be able to hold your own, with or without Zoo.
Love to you and Bob, from Brown Hare (keeping a safe distance) (_)
